Did you know?

The Greek peninsula has always been a crossroad for people, merchandise and cultures between East-West and North-South. So camels were not an unusual sighting in Greece of the period! Just like in Egypt or in the Middle East areas, they were the most reliable long-distance, heavy-weight means of transport for goods and merchandise.

Χάνια([xánia]: deriving from the Turkish word han) were inns where people and animals could rest along their travels, but also important meeting points (hubs one could say), where people would exchange news and knowledge from the places they were coming from or had passed during their journeys.

In Europeana Collections there is plenty of archival material revealing aspects of history, usually ignored in the schoolbooks.
