General information

On 14 March, the State of Alarm was decreed in Spain, paralysing a large part of the country's activities and directly affecting almost all the residents of the Cemetery District of Alicante, a district with a marked vulnerability and exclusion, where most people subsist thanks to the underground economy, through activities such as scrap collection, street vending and household cleaning. This quarantine has left some people who live day to day without being able to "make a living".

However, the neighbors have once again demonstrated that unity is strength, creating a self-managed neighborhood group to distribute products that are not covered by other entities, such as basic foodstuffs like bread, vegetables, hygiene products and baby products. This is an example of community and concern for the other, at a time when the administrations and other entities are overwhelmed by the high demand throughout the city.

Solcir, after having previously collaborated with the Neighbourhood, launches this project on behalf of the neighbours of the cemetery neighbourhood to be able to supply the citizen networks that are structured, responding to unmet needs through essential products of first necessity: food, hygiene and baby products.

Through the resources collected, assistance to the Neighbourhood will be complemented by setting up a Essential Products Bank self-managed by the neighbourhood itself, making purchases from suppliers who already distribute to shops in the area.

Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign

Support to the self-managed citizen network for the supply and distribution of essential products.

**General Objective
To provide basic resources to the citizen networks that are structured for mutual aid in the Cemetery District.

Specific Objective 1
Finance basic necessities: food, hygiene and cleaning products and baby products.

Specific Objective 2
To support the inhabitants of the Cemetery District logistically so that they are able to respond to the current crisis through their networks of solidarity and mutual aid.

Why this is important

The project is aimed at people in a situation of vulnerability and exclusion, who after the crisis of COVID-19 that we are experiencing, have gone from a situation of risk to a situation of emergency.

Team and experience

Solcir is formed by a group of people organized around the development of solidarity activities in international cooperation and local development projects. Our mission is to be a platform for any solidarity initiative, as in this case, the one proposed by the neighborhood group.

This project is coordinated by the following people:

Francisca Alcazar Nortes Paqui is a reference figure in the Cemetery District. She was born in this same neighborhood and is the daughter of "El Loco", an illustrious neighbor who founded the bar that bears her name. Today, Paqui runs the bar with the rest of her family, proud of her father's history and of the neighborhood. Knowing the problems of the Barrio, she is a tireless fighter to improve the situation of her neighbors, championing the qualities of her community and reclaiming the injustices she witnesses daily. Paqui is the coordinator of the distribution in the Barrio, making available the ground floor of her house for the distribution of products.

Pastor Heredia Juarez A neighbor born in the Cemetery District, Pastor is a businessman with extensive experience in the construction and waste management sector. With his company shut down due to the epidemic (Chatarrería los Cuñaos), Pastor has taken the initiative and taken charge of food collection, assisting Paqui with the distribution and logistics involved. Pastor is the coordinator of transport and supplies for the Essential Products Bank.

Caroline Hetterschijt Dutch worker at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), together with a group of colleagues, founded the association Solcir for the development of solidarity activities and collaboration in international cooperation and local development projects. Caroline is the ambassador of the project on behalf of Solcir and is in charge of the strategic coordination.

These people are supported by different professionals and entities that have been working in the Neighborhood for years, who ensure advice for the proper functioning of the distribution from the social, logistics, strategy, administration and health security. However, the organizational and call burden falls on the community itself.
